How to Measure a Round Sling

Round sling

Round slings are used to lift heavy loads in all sorts of different industries. But how do you know what size to get?

This blog will explain what round slings are and how to measure them to ensure you use the correct size sling for your job.

What Is a Round Sling?

A round sling is a type of lifting sling that’s made by wrapping a protective polyester jacket around a series of tough load-bearing polyester yarns. This design results in a super-strong sling that can be used to transport heavy weights in a safe and secure manner.

Thanks to their material and construction, round slings are lightweight, inexpensive and easy to store and handle, making them a go-to lifting accessory for many in the construction industry.

The round sling creates a circle (hence the name), which you can the easily slip around the object you are lifting and attach to a lifting hook or D shackle. These slings are adaptable to each lift, and if measured and fitted correctly, they can lift some very heavy loads indeed. We can supply round slings with working load limits up to 500 tonnes!

But how do you measure a round sling? Are there any common mistakes people make? Let’s find out…

How to Measure a Round Sling

To measure a round sling, you should:

  1. Lay the sling flat on a surface
  2. Measure from one tip of the sling to the other

How to measure a round sling

When measuring a round sling, it is not necessary to measure the sling’s circumference. Many people make this mistake and will cut a round sling that is no longer in use to determine its length – this isn’t needed! Instead, simply place your round sling on a surface and pull it flat, then measure it tip to tip to determine its length.

Before purchasing a round sling, it is also important that you know the working load limit (WLL), sling configuration and amount of cut, wear or abrasion resistance you will need for your lifting application. Once you have this information, you should be ready to purchase your new round sling!
