Hand Winch vs Electric Winch: Which Should I Use?

Electric winch vs hand winch

A winch is a highly versatile tool that can be used for all sorts of jobs, including vehicle recovery and construction work.

Both hand winches and electric winches are designed to pull, lift or tension objects using a cable or rope that is wound onto a drum or spool.

The main difference between hand winches and electric winches is how they're powered: hand winches use a handle and physical effort, whereas electric winches use an electric motor or battery.

There are pros and cons to both options, which is why we've put together this buying guide to help you decide what type of winch will work best for you.

Hand winches

Hand winches (also known as manual winches) are powered by manual labour. The operator must crank the handle to wind the wire or rope onto a spool/drum, and this generates enough force to move the load in question.

This type of winch is typically used in construction work and recreational settings such as off-roading to lift or pull machinery, cars and other heavy items.

Hand winch pros:

  • Lower price point. Hand winches are generally cheaper to buy than electric winches as they are less sophisticated.

  • Can be used anywhere. Hand-operated winches are ideal for situations where there's no power source available. If you're planning to work in a remote area, or if you need a winch that you can depend on in emergency situations, this type of winch may be preferable.

  • Easy to maintain and repair. Unlike their electric counterparts, manual winches don't require expensive electrical repairs and maintenance.

Hand winch cons:

  • Lower weight capacity. Because their power relies on the physical strength of the operator, hand winches may not be suitable for manoeuvring heavier loads.

  • Slower and less powerful. If you're likely to be using your winch several times a week, it's probably worth investing in an electric winch as this will save you time and energy over a manually-operated model.

Electric winches

Electric winches rely on an electric motor or a battery to operate. These devices are typically faster and generate more power than hand-operated winches. Electric winches tend to be used in industrial settings to lift very heavy loads such as large cars, boats and building materials.

Electric winch pros:

  • More powerful. Electric winches can generate a more constant flow of greater power than a person can.

  • Faster operation. An electric motor can wind the rope/wire onto the drum at whatever speed it is programmed to, whereas a person can only go as fast as they are physically able.

  • Easier to use. Powered winches can be operated at the push of a button rather than relying on the consistent effort of a human being. This makes them an ideal option if you need to use a winch very frequently.

Electric winch cons:

  • More expensive. Electric winches tend to start at a higher price point than manual winches, since they are typically manufactured using more expensive materials and require a more sophisticated construction.

  • Reliant on a power source. Electric winches cannot function without a charged-up battery or an external power source. If you find yourself without access to either, your electric winch will be useless.

Choosing the right winch for you

Both hand winches and electric winches are brilliant pieces of kit that can be used to lift, pull or tension very heavy objects. When choosing between an electric or manual winch, the main things to consider are price, weight capacity and frequency of use.

Manual winches are cheaper but less powerful, making them better suited to lighter loads. They also rely on manual labour to operate, meaning jobs could take longer to complete.

Electric winches are generally more expensive, so it's important to consider your budget before purchasing. While they are a more expensive option, they do make up for it in terms of power and efficiency - but bear in mind that they will only work as long as there's a power source for them.
