How many lumens do I need for a head torch?

Lumens measure the total amount of visible light emitted from a light source per unit of time. The more lumens a head torch has, the brighter the beam will be.

For use in campsites or urban environments, a head torch with 100-250 lumens is usually enough.

If you’re using your head torch to go on a night time walk or run, a head torch with 300-600 lumens is recommended.

What should I consider when buying a head torch?

Before buying a head torch, there are a few things to consider other than the brightness...

Waterproof rating

You also need to think about whether you need a waterproof head torch and how waterproof you need it to be. On the waterproof scale, for a product to be considered waterproof it must have an IP rating of IP65-67. However, if you plan on spending prolonged amounts of time getting your head torch wet, you’ll need a far higher IP rating.

Battery life

Finally, battery life is an important factor to consider. Check the max running time in the product description, this will tell you how long the head torch will last on one charge or with fresh batteries. Obviously, the longer you intend to use your head torch in one session, the longer max running time you’ll want it to have. Typically, the better the max running time, the more money you’ll need to spend.
