Allows the ladder to stand vertical on un-level ground, as is common outdoors in a garden. Easy to fit. Needs to be re-tightened after first use, because it settles into place with weight on the ladder. The advice to secure the top of the ladder is important, to prevent slippage of the top to left or right.
